A young boy, Phillip Pirrip, also known as Pip, lives with his older sister, Mrs. Joe, and her husband, Mr. Joe. When Pip visits his parents at the cemetery, an old man threatened him into killing him if he did not do anything he was told, which his orders were to get him food and a file. Later, Mr. Joe, who is also a blacksmith, receives a job for for the king, and Pip joins along. As they continue with their order, they catch the man who Pip saw at the cemetery. He mentions the task Pip had to do but does not say that he was the one who did it. Pip feels guilty for what he had done. Mrs. Joe does not believe he appreciates the care and love she tries expressing to him, but Mr. Joe helps and supports him whenever she leads into something like that. He stands by his side, providing support and help.
Mr. Pumblechook invites him to play at a lady's house, Miss Havisham. Along her side is a girl named Estella, a young girl that Miss Havisham adopted as her daughter. When Pip meets them, Miss Havisham wears a wedding gown. Pip finds out later that her husband had left her before the wedding because he was using her to get money. Time goes by and Pip visits regularly to see Estella and Mrs. Havisham. In his eyes, Estella is the most beautiful girl, and he falls in love with love. Through her heartless ways, Pip manages to still love her, but he wishes that one day she will love him back. Miss Havisham tells Pip to "Love her, love her, love her! If she favours you, love her. If she wounds you, love her. If she tears your heart to pieces - and as it gets older and stronger, it will tear deeper -

love her, love her, love her!", and he has her word to never stop loving her. Miss Havisham requests to see Joe. When he came along with Pip in his next visit, she says that Joe should be the one to guide him and not visit at the place anymore. Soon, he finds out that his sister has been attacked, and he feels like he knows the cause of it, which he suspects to be Orlick, but he does not have any proof of the incident.
Before Pip moves to London, he meets a girl named Biddy, who helps with Mrs. Joe. They talk to each other about how Pip wishes to love her instead of Estella, and they know that they should have been the ones to love each other, but, of course, he still loves Estella ever since he met her. He goes to London to live with Herbert Pocket. Pip stays in London for a while, learning from his ways. Throughout the times he lived in London with Pocket, both Herbert and Pip started to get behind on their payments and causes Pip to owe more debts, but he manages to keep his word of paying back.
Later, he finds out that his sister died. He visits his home but still thinks of Estella. Although she learns to be a cruel woman, he loves her with all his heart. He then finds out she wants to get married to Dummle. Pip does not agree with her decision and spills out everything he has wanted to say, and a part of what he says is "You are a part of my existence, part of myself." Still, nothing changes Estella's mind about who she wants to marry. She continues to live a very unhappy life. Pip, in desperate need of Estella's love like the way he loves her, continues with his life.
Past midnight, Pip crosses the London Bridge. He tries to keep himself away from home because he does not want to disturb Herbert if he were to be in bed. He went to the Whitefriars gate, feeling "muddy and weary". Pip receives a note from a messenger saying " 'PLEASE READ THIS, HERE.' ", and as he opened and read it, noticing Wemmick's writing, " 'DON'T GO HOME' ". Pip visits Wemmick, and Wemmick explains that the note was to keep from any of the evidence to spread around in case it it used against him. Wemmick tells his reason for Pip being there and the reason was about what he heard. He heard " 'that a certain person not altogether of uncolonial pursuits, and not unpossessed of portable property... we won't name this person-' ". Because of his curiosity, Pip asks questions, but Wemmick does not enough information about the person, but he does know that " 'it either is, or it will be, or it's in great danger of being' ". Wemmick warns him to not come back to him if he had gone home and leaves, only giving him the information that was needed to be said.
Pip experiences a hard time trying not to think of Estella. He remembers her wanting to get married but not with him. Since he cannot get rid of Estella from his heart and mind, he asks Herbert to help him with not speaking to her again. He waits every night for something to happen, but, of course, all there is to the nights are Herbert's foot steps. Even though he has not seen Estella for the longest, he thinks about her, making him live a very miserable life.

She offers to pay any debts he owes to anyone, giving him nine hundred pounds, and Pip kindly accepts, thanking for her benefit and generosity. Miss Havisham apologizes to Pip about her teaching Estella the wrong ways and her not falling for him because she was the one that said to love her no matter what. Pip asks if she was married, which of he already knew, and she says that she did get married. Miss Havisham tells Pip that only if she knew about her past, but Pip was told about her past of the man, Compeyson. He asks about Estella's mother to know and find any clues. Miss Havisham mentions Jaggers bringing her there once and says that she had a child that was two or three years old that she adopted. When Pip was about to leave, he sees the fire that was near Miss Havisham landed on her, causing a massive situation for her. Pip hurries to help her out. Miss Havisham lays in pain from all the injuries that are now on her. In her "low solemn voice", she yells out " 'When she first came, I meant to save her from misery like mine.' ", and she tells Pip to write down that she forgives her. Later that day, Pip speaks and mocks Miss Havisham's words " 'Take the pencil and write under my name, "I forgive her." ' " Herbert helps out Pip with his injuries and talks about the cases Jaggers has been attending. As Pip listens to Herbert, he figures out that the man they have been hiding by the river is Estella's father.
Receiving a letter, he follows what it says, telling him to meet an unknown person at "the little sluice-house by the limekiln". He arrives at the place and walks up to the door, waiting for someone to answer, but all of a sudden, someone grabs him. The anonymous person uses a flint and steel, letting the sparks die out. It lit near his face and showed that it had been Orlick. Pip tries to escape but cannot, and Orlick continues to make him suffer. Orlick plans on killing and getting rid of everything that is part of Pip. He brings up his sister and tells him that it was Pips fault for the cause of her death that Orlick was a part of. He screams with all his might, using all his energy to find help from Herbert and Trabb's son.
The man Pip and Herbert hid by the river goes by the name of Abel Magwitch. It was time for him to escape from London. Pip helped him throughout his times in London so that he can escape, but they end up getting caught. Magwitch, noticing Compeyson, dives in the water to attack him and so does Compeyson, but it ends up that Compeyson drowned and that it was not Magwitch who did it, but it leaves Magwitch as a murderer. Although Magwitch deals with a rough time, Pip remains loyal to him. They were taken to the police court the next day, but they delayed his case. Soon, Herbert tells Pip that he will leave him to go to Cairo. He offers Pip to join him, but Pip decides he cannot leave yet. Magwitch became very ill in his times of being in prison. Pip visits him daily, but one day, Pip speaks of his daughter and that he loves her, and Magwitch lays there peacefully, slowly ending his life.
He knew the time would come for him to become ill. Pip lays in bed, feeling weak. Joe pays him a visit to see how he was doing and tells him of what goes on at home. Pip asks about Miss Havisham and finds out that she had passed away. Also, he finds out that Orlick broke into Mr. Pumlechook's home and was put into the county jail. Pip felt stronger, and Joe makes sure of his decision of being well again. In the morning, Pip goes to Joe's room, seeing no one in there. He finds a letter that says "Not wishful to intrude I have departures fur you are well again dear Pip and will do better without, P.S. Ever the best of friends". Joe paid for all his debts, giving him less to stress about.
Pip decides to visit his old town to talk to Biddy of his business. Going to the Satis House, Pip sees Mr. Pumblechook, and Mr. Pumblechook welcomes him. Afterwards, Pip arrives to see Joe and Biddy. Crying, Biddy tells Pip it was her wedding day and that she is married to Joe. He explains of how great they are for each other and asks for their forgiveness. Before he leaves, he enters his old room to rest for a few minutes.
"For eleven years, [he] had not seen Joe nor Biddy with [his] bodily eyes." Biddy tells him he should marry, but Pip thinks he should not. He hears the death of Estella's husband and the unhappy life she lived. He visits her and sees that changes in her occurred. Estella tells him that "[she] have often thought of [him]". Although they had not been together, they remain having "'a place in [their] heart'". They stay friends, no longer separating again for "[Pip] saw no shadow of another parting from her".

'Estella, to the last hour of my life, you cannot choose but remain part of my character, part of the little good in me, part of the evil. But, in this separation I associate you only with the good, and I will faithfully hold you to that always, for you must have done me far more good than harm, let me feel now what sharp distress I may.'
'You have always
held your place in my heart.'
